An Apple Developer individual account requires a real identity, an Apple Account with 2-factor authentication and legal capacity to enroll in your region. Individual enrollment uses your legal name as the seller. Program membership costs US$99 per year, with local pricing where available. Check Apple's official enrollment requirements before starting.
The first decision is who should publish the application. An individual account can suit a person who is the appropriate product owner; it should not be used to bypass an organization's verification requirements. Work through 6 checks covering ownership, identity, enrollment, payment, access and continuity. The objective is a maintainable publishing arrangement rather than simply completing a form.
Individual enrollment needs to match the product's actual ownership
Individual enrollment is appropriate to evaluate when the person is the proper publisher and accepts the public identity connected to that role. A simpler registration process is not a sufficient reason to place a company's product under someone's personal ownership.
A professional publishing an independently owned product may consider this path. A contractor building for a client needs to distinguish their development business from the client's publisher responsibilities. A founder operating through a U.S. legal entity needs to examine that entity's enrollment rather than assume a personal account is interchangeable.
These examples frame the decision; they do not replace Apple's eligibility criteria. If there is uncertainty about the legal entity, signing authority or responsibility for the service, resolve it before submitting information and paying. Discovery is the right time to identify that dependency, before a public launch date becomes a commitment.
Include ownership in the development agreement. The product brand, the contracting party and the person who writes the code can be different. A clear agreement makes those relationships visible and gives the technical team a workable release plan.
Check who should appear as the seller before choosing an account
Confirm the appropriate public publisher identity before selecting an enrollment type. The name of an application is a separate decision from the identity behind its distribution; Apple's developer name documentation explains the account-type restrictions.
| Ownership question | Individual enrollment | Organization enrollment |
|---|---|---|
| Appropriate publisher | Enrolled person | Eligible legal entity |
| Public seller identity | Individual's legal name | Verified entity name |
| Initial evidence | Accurate personal information | Entity information and authority |
| Decision basis | Product properly held by the person | Product properly held by the organization |
Apple explains the client-company arrangement in its guidance for contract developers. Establish the client's publisher account and authorized access rather than choosing a contractor's personal account merely because it already exists.
Also decide who will receive account communications, review agreements and oversee renewal. If the business depends on an address or device controlled by someone who may leave the project, that dependency exists even while the application is operating normally.
Prepare accurate identity information and account recovery
Prepare consistent personal information and secure access before beginning enrollment. The account holder needs to sign in and respond to the verification steps presented through the official process.
Check the person's name, address and contact details against the relevant records. Do not copy a job title, employment history or sample identity from an online tutorial. A guide can explain what a step means; it cannot provide facts that are true for every applicant.
Then establish how the holder will regain access if the usual device is unavailable. Two-factor authentication and an operating recovery plan have different jobs. Security should protect the account while documented responsibilities allow the business to handle routine changes and incidents.
Keep sensitive access information in an appropriate secure system rather than a general project document. Agree when the holder will be available to read and accept agreements that require their participation. The delivery team can explain the technical implications without acting as the person's identity.
Use the current official enrollment flow
Begin through Apple's official channels and follow the requirements shown for the applicant's situation. Apple documents enrollment and verification through the Apple Developer app as well as enrollment support on the web.
Menu labels and verification steps can change. That is why this guide organizes decisions and evidence rather than reproducing screenshots from 2015. If an actual prompt differs from an old instruction, use the current official guidance linked to that step.
Before accepting an agreement, confirm the signed-in account and the submitted details. If a verification request appears, track the existing enrollment through official support. Opening additional accounts to get around an unresolved request can make responsibility and status harder to follow.
For a U.S. business buying development services, the team should identify tasks that need the holder's involvement during discovery. Those tasks belong in the schedule alongside design, implementation and testing, instead of arriving as an unexpected request during the final release week.
Verify payment details and keep the confirmation
Verify the displayed fee, currency and purchase conditions when you reach payment. Membership is separate from the application development fee, cloud hosting and product support.
For individual web enrollment, Apple describes the use of the individual's own credit card in its payment and enrollment guidance. Follow the accepted payment options for your actual flow and keep the order confirmation with the appropriate business records.
A payment receipt is not evidence that an application has been published. Check the membership status through the official account. The app still needs its own configuration, signed release, tests, listing and store review before customers can use a public version.
If payment or confirmation has a problem, collect the order and enrollment identifiers for official support. Do not send identification or payment material to an unofficial contact found in a tutorial's comments. The technical team should help organize the issue without requesting materials it does not need.
Assign access without sharing the account holder's identity
Plan team access after confirming the membership type and status. Sharing the holder's password is not an adequate release process.
For individual memberships, people added to App Store Connect receive access to its content rather than becoming Apple Developer Program team members. Apple documents the distinction in roles and permissions. The technical plan needs to account for those limits before promising complete contractor autonomy.
Name the people responsible for listing information, builds, review responses and tasks requiring the holder. A role in one service should not be assumed to provide every capability in another. Validate the workflow using the real account configuration rather than a generic screenshot.
When a vendor's work ends, review granted access and confirm that the publisher can continue maintenance. The handoff should include source code, documentation and release dependencies. The app publishing guide explains the work that follows enrollment.
Keep renewal and ownership changes visible in the operating plan
Assign responsibility for membership continuity and account changes before the first release. Check Apple's renewal guidance for the channel used to enroll; membership creates a continuing operating obligation rather than a one-time administrative task.
Apple provides a request process for updating an individual membership to an organization, subject to its criteria in account information updates. Treat that as a process to verify, not an automatic reason to begin under the wrong publisher identity.
Review contacts, authorized access, payment arrangements and the tasks that require the holder. As an illustrative procedure, the team could revisit the inventory before each significant release. The exact frequency should fit the product; the objective is to avoid making continuity depend on one person's memory.
Four enrollment shortcuts create problems later
The enrollment is more reliable when identity and responsibility remain accurate at every stage. Avoid shortcuts that turn a publishing arrangement into an undocumented personal dependency.
- Selecting an individual account only to move faster. Confirm the appropriate publisher before choosing the enrollment type.
- Copying tutorial information. Submit facts that are true and consistent for the actual applicant.
- Promising approval in 2 days. Track submission, verification, purchase and confirmation as separate states.
- Handing the account to a contractor. Use supported permissions and document the tasks that remain with the holder.
The appropriate budget includes account preparation and release coordination in addition to the program fee. A membership purchase is not a quote for launching the product. Ask the development partner to identify those responsibilities in the scope so both parties understand what the agreed price covers.
Megaleios includes publisher ownership in app planning
Fabiano Belmonte founded Megaleios in 2012, and the company has had a U.S. base in Orlando since December 2022. Our mobile app development service establishes publisher responsibilities during discovery before fixing scope, price and timeline. The CIAB FEBRABAN case study presents an event application delivery without replacing the requirements for another publisher. Code and documentation transfer after full payment, while the holder retains responsibility for their own account. Our delivery process explains how these responsibilities connect to the contracted work.
